Dear Friends of the gallery,

Forty-six years ago, at the very first Art Basel fair in 1969, we showed a set of fourteen silkscreens, The Long March, published in 1966, by JEAN DEWASNE. That same year the great Swiss curator and museum director, Harald Szeemann, organized Dewasne’s first museum show at the Kunsthalle in Bern. At the fair, an enthusiastic Szeemann introduced us to numerous art lovers and collectors, many of whom purchased the portfolio of silkscreens.
We have been present at Basel for forty-six years straight, and this year we are particularly proud to be exhibiting a truly exceptional work by Dewasne:

The Apotheosis of Marat

1951, lacquer on aluminum, 1.68 m high x 5.68 m long, signed and dated.

This work belonged to the prestigious collector Louis Bogaerts from Knokke, Belgium, who had a house specially built to display his collection. Bogaerts made the following comment with regard to this work’s place in his house: “I calculated that, if I wanted to hang Dewasne’s six-meter-long Apotheosis of Marat as it should be, I had to plan for a panel of a given length and given height to the left of the door.” Those are the words of a passionate collector who thinks first of his works of art and then makes architecture serve them, as did Mr. Beyeler at his foundation.

Dewasne’s work will be accompanied by others from the 1950s by artists such as Victor Vasarely, Emile Gilioli and Jean Deyrolle. We will also pay tributes to Gottfried Honegger, whose retrospective at the Pompidou Center in Paris will open on June 23, and to our faithful friend Hans Jörg Glattfelder, who was honored with a wonderful retrospective last year at the Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich. Obviously, we will also feature works by our contemporary artists, such as Jean-François Dubreuil, Jean-Michel Gasquet (whose work is currently on show at the gallery), and Renaud Jacquier Stajnowicz (who produced a monumental work for the Espace de l’Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux at the end of year).

We look forward to greeting you on our stand.
Warm regards,

Anne and Diane Lahumière
